If you thought my Danzig shrine was convoluted, boy howdy have I got the guy for you. (This time, that's only partially on me. Otherwise, it's because this motherfucker decided to have a 36yr+ long career, and change his name several times.)

For the sake of my sanity - and yours (I say, as if anyone is reading this) this part of the Raven shrine is centered around the basis - & Stevie Richard's idol - that he swore up & down would get revenge on Tommy Dreamer for him at ECW Holiday Hell 1994. So, the first iteration of ECW's Raven. As far as Scott Levy himself, or the Raven gimmick running through...at least half a dozen other promotions in the span of just under 18 years, that's a problem for future me. Raven debuted in ECW by way of Stevie Richards on January 7, 1995 - after weeks of Richards just...being. This, nothing compares to this. Not Haleys Comet. Not the assassination of J.F.K. Not even the signing of the U.S. constitution. This is the biggest day in the history of Extreme Championship Wrestling, and Joey Styles, I am a man of my word!

Philadelphia's hottest club has everything! A pretty boy with a mullet wearing neon fringe, the Offspring being played illegally, jorts, talk of twelve year olds in crack-filled stupors!

& At first glance you get...just kind of an anti-social, Gen X grunge outcast gimmick - that almost immediately slides into mind games & manipulation, and (eventually) finds an almost career long feud & progesses into being a fucking cult leader with crippling daddy issues. No big deal. (For the most part, there's just a lot of abusing his lackeys for his own gain. Lovely. Everything is about Raven for better or worse.) It really sounds less interesting when I say it like that, doesn't it?

Maybe I was just brainwashed as a teenager. In that inital Raven ECW run there's a...love more-than-triangle, a stolen wife & kid, probably every betrayal known to mankind, y'know. Normal ECW stuff. (& Shit like that is absolutely positively what made Raven's storylines & booking a cornerstone of...whatever the fuck made ECW work in the mid-90's. And by that I mean grittiness. Oh you're saying Stone Cold's King Of The Ring promo started the Attitude era in American wrestling? Fuck off, my guy.) Raven as a character (and partially as a human being) is either incredibly beloved or absolutely hated - but for me just kind of bundles up every reason I still enjoy rewatching ECW into...one role. Maybe I'll bitch about that later

Anyways. Google exists. I don't have to tell you this. I just have to be a little too enthusiastic about a character that debuted when I was six months old.
